For the second time this summer, police in Northern Virginia are after a group of crooks skimming ATMs. News4’s Pat Collins has more on the new scam and how to protect yourself.
Yet another high-tech ATM scam is underway in Fairfax County, Virginia -- and the thieves are more brazen than ever.
Police said a slew of Navy Federal Credit Union branches had been hit by "ATM skimming" in the last month. Skimming is the process of attaching devices to an ATM that allow criminals to steal credit or debit card data.
These latest incidents follow reports of a similar scam that swept across both Fairfax and Leesburg earlier in the year.
Police have released video footage of the criminals attaching devices to ATMs in Fairfax County, which include clear images of suspects' faces. None of the suspects have been apprehended yet.
Lucy Caldwell of Fairfax County Police called the criminals "very bold and very brazen."
She told News4's Pat Collins that the devices are often custom-made for a specific bank's ATMs, which will be used for some time before criminals target a different bank.
