A Dollar More Per Hour?

D.C. parking meter rates could double

Ward 1 D.C. Council Member Jim Graham is proposing raising D.C.'s meter rates from $1 to $2 per hour.

He'll suggest the increase during next Tuesday's City Council meeting. He estimates the city could make about $1 million more per month -- money he hopes would benefit city housing programs. Graham says,

"We thought about what we can cut and there have been significant cuts across the board, but we can also increase our ability in terms of revenue," Graham said.

Graham also is proposing the city’s ban on Saturday parking enforcement be lifted, adding even more dollars and getting more shoppers in and out of street parking.

"Turnover means you can come downtown and shop and find a legal place to park other than the garages and the way it is right now," he said. "People just sit at those meters hour after hour after hour."

If approved, the parking increases could begin as early as March 1.
