Investigators are looking in to the possibility that an SUV driver lost control while attempting to make U-turn, striking Maria Colindres at the bus stop near Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Avenue.
A 77-year-old woman was struck and killed at a bus stop in Wheaton Thursday evening, News4's Erika Gonzalez reported.
The victim, Maria Colindres, had been headed to work and was waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Ferrara Avenue when she was struck by an SUV.
Investigators are looking into the possibility that the driver of the SUV, Chery Denise Green, lost control while attempting to make a U-turn. Green, 56, drove over the median and across three lanes of traffic before striking Colindres and ending up in a nearby yard.
Three children were also in the SUV with the driver. No one in the vehicle was reported injured.
Colindres was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Her children and grandchildren were at the scene Thursday evening. They said when they couldn't reach Colindres on her cell phone, they knew something terrible had happened.
The crash happened less than a mile from where 53-year-old Marlyn Eres Ali was fatally struck while crossing Connecticut Avenue in Wheaton in March.
