3 Killed During Long Holiday Weekend in DC

A 16-year-old girl is one of three people who died in shootings in the District over the holiday weekend. All of them happened in broad daylight. News4’s Darcy Spencer reports.

Police are searching for separate gunmen after three people were killed in three separate shootings over the long holiday weekend.

The most recent shooting happened Sunday afternoon in the 600 block of L Street SE. Police said a man and a woman were found suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man, later identified as Anthony Young, 27, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said interim police Chief Peter Newsham at a news conference. The woman was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The deadly shooting happened blocks away from the Marine barracks.

"That's a very unusual area for a shooting like that to occur," Newsham said.

Newsham said the victims and gunman knew each other. Police described the gunman as a short black male wearing a gray coat and glasses.

Later in the afternoon, a man was shot and killed in the 1300 block of Howard Road, Southeast, in the Anacostia neighborhood. Police identified the victim as Orlando Donald Silver III, 37, of Washington.

On Friday, Breyona McMillian, 16, died after she was shot multiple times on the 1200 block of I Street SE.

Police said at least one gunman fired the shots, and McMillian was not the intended target

"It appears at least one suspect fired multiple times indiscriminately," Newsham said on Sunday. "There were multiple people out there. Somebody probably does have some information. If they could give us a call and share that with us, I think that would be helpful."

McMillian grew up in D.C. but moved to Iowa in February to attend boarding school. She was home this week for the first time since she left, her aunt said.

"Everybody loved her," McMillian's cousin Quashawn Wheeler said. "She was young, pretty, educated, liked to go to school."
