11th Street Bridge to Bring Traffic Relief

Official opening on Sunday

Since 2009, commuters have been stuck in construction delays on the 11th Street Bridge. But starting this weekend, some relief should be on the way. A newly completed span of the bridge is ready to go.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony happened this morning, but the span won't actually carry traffic until Sunday.

When open, the bridge will carry 295 traffic inbound into the downtown area.

Drivers hope the new configuration will cut down on drive times and make their commute a bit less frustrating.

While an improvement, this weekend's opening won't solve all the problems-- it is just the first phase in a 3 step plan. Another piece will fall into place when the second, outbound bridge opens next week.

But when that span opens, there will be a bump in the road. Drivers will no longer be able to access MLK Avenue or Good Hope Road. Access to local roads won't happen until a 3rd span is opened - still a few years away.
