Maryland's Board of Education voted in favor of a statewide mask mandate in schools Thursday afternoon.

The state superintendent has supported universal masking for all kids. Only one member of the board opposed a statewide mandate, saying local jurisdictions should be allowed to make their own decisions.

The next step for the regulation will be to go before a legislative committee for review. If it passes that final review, then the mandate would be set to go into effect.

Charles, Montgomery and Prince George's counties already have school mask mandates, as do several others.

As shown in the map above, the school districts in yellow already have mask requirements, and areas in blue show districts that recommend masking. The other regions have no local rules for wearing masks.

Masks are already required in all schools in Virginia and the District.
