The old-fashioned American pool hall, with its utilitarian furnishings, scuzzy crowds, and eau de Natty Lite fragrance, is generally known to be the pathetic fashion victim of the nightlife scene. If the pool hall is the fashion victim, Continental Pool Lounge owner Kurt Large is definitely the Tim Gunn of restaurateurs.
Large, in collaboration with interior designer Travis Smith, has completely revamped the traditional every-man hangout into a Chuck-E-Cheese's for the Sex & the City crowd. The lounge boasts a jukebox, pool table, darts, and ping-pong table, as well as a period inspired decor that hangs somewhere between The Jetsons and The Waltons with a twist. Large has also reworked the traditional greasy spoon menu of the pool lounge into a selection of old favorites and haute comfort food, including items like Caribbean jerk hot wings and seared ahi tuna sandwiches.
Pop in during happy hour, from 5-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6-9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, for $3 special drafts, $4 dollar rail drinks, and appetizers for half price. Ladies play pool for free on Tuesdays and select items are 1/2 price Tuesday-Friday until 11 p.m.: salads on Tuesday, burgers on Wednesday, Cuban sandwiches on Thursday, and fish baskets on Friday.
