Shots Fired As Off-Duty Cop Intervenes in Robbery

WASHINGTON -- District police said an off-duty officer exchanged gunfire with a robber in northwest Washington.

Police said the officer, who was not in uniform, was in the 2600 block of Georgia Avenue Wednesday night. He identified himself as a police officer to the alleged robber, who fired one shot at him. The officer then fired one shot back.

Police said the suspect fled. It was unclear if he was hit.

Neither the officer nor the robbery victim was hurt.

Officials were searching the Columbia Heights area for the suspect.
