A police officer almost was shot in the face after a traffic stop in Fort Washington last week, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.
Wendell Anthony Whren Jr., 20, was arrested Tuesday and charged with assault.
On Dec. 3, an officer initiated a traffic stop and upon approaching the vehicle, Whren bailed out and fled on foot, police said. During the officer’s pursuit, Whren pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer’s face, but it malfunctioned, police said.
Whren continued to flee and escaped, police said.
Officers spotted Whren Tuesday and apprehended him after a brief foot chase, police said. A handgun was recovered by police.
