Katrina's Anniversary Commemorated at Newseum

It began as a horrific natural disaster, but developed into one of the most regrettable federal responses to human suffering in American history. Now the Newseum is offering a look back on Hurricane Katrina as the world saw it.

Five years ago, the massive hurricane barreled toward the Gulf Coast. It soon became clear that the levees surrounding New Orleans were no match for the storm.

To commemorate this somber anniversary, the Newseum has put together a documentary that combines reflections of the reporters who covered the disaster with the images and videos they shared with the World. Included in the display is the Pulitzer Prize-winning work of local newspapers that recorded the toll of the storm on the people of the Gulf Coast.

The exhibit will also include the front pages of 80 newspapers from around the world from the days after the hurricane hit.

The display opens Friday and will remain through September 2011.
