GM Plans Temporary Layoffs at Plant in Maryland

Furloughs scheduled to begin in February

Amid continuing struggles for the U.S. auto industry, a General Motors plant in Maryland is planning to close for a week next month due to a drop in demand for GM vehicles.

The plant is in White Marsh, just north of Baltimore.  It manufactures hybrid transmissions and transmissions for pickup trucks that are sent to three other GM plants that are slated to be closed.

Almost 80 employees at White Marsh already have been laid off due to slowdowns in production. Now, with auto sales sagging, a spokesman for the plant tells the Baltimore Sun its almost 240 hourly workers likely will be furloughed for week unless demand for GM vehicles goes up.  He says the temporary layoffs are scheduled to begin February 23rd.
