A new section of D.C.'s Riverwalk trail officially opened in Southeast today. Navy officials along with city leaders celebrated the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The 2,300-foot promenade is located behind the Washington Navy Yard along the Anacostia River. It is a transportation alternative as well as a tourist attraction, according to city officials.
The boardwalk was completed 10 years ago, but it had been off limits to the public due to security concerns after 9/11.
The Navy’s portion of the D.C. Riverwalk trail is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
D.C.'s Riverwalk project is expected to be completed by 2014.
