SURRY, Va. (AP) — One of two nuclear reactors at Dominion Energy’s Surry Power Station in Virginia has been shut down while it undergoes repairs for a steam leak.
Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a notice of the “hot shutdown” on Wednesday. The NRC classified the incident as “non-emergency,” saying there is no radiation, personnel injuries or contamination events associated with it.
NRC spokesman Roger Hannah says a “hot shutdown” enables crews to keep the reactor temperature up while repairs are made, making it easier to resume normal operations when the job is done.
Dominion spokesman Kenneth Holt says plant operators noticed the steam leak on Tuesday.
The loss of output won’t affect the PJM Interconnection, which operates the electrical grid for 65 million people.
