WASHINGTON — A former imagery scientist from the U.S. National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has been sentenced 12 months and one day in jail for bringing home more than 500 pages of classified documents, according to the Federal Times.
Mohan L. Nirala, 52, of Laurel, Maryland pleaded guilty to unauthorized retention of defense information September 16 of last year.
Nirala worked at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency from 2009 to 2015, but came under scrutiny in 2013 when an investigation was launched into the removal of classified materials from NGA headquarters in Springfield, Virginia.
Nirala’s security clearance was suspended in 2014.
Shortly after, the FBI discovered more than 20 classified documents during a warranted search of his home.
He had claimed not to have those documents, Justice Department officials reportedly said.
Nirala was arrested two years later on March 8, 2016 in his basement.
Upon his arrest, federal agents discovered more than 500 pages of secret and top secret files.
