Charles Co. School Bus Struck by Dump Truck; 17 Kids, Driver Transported to Hospital

All injuries appear to be minor, Charles County police say

Nearly 20 children and a driver were sent to the hospital Friday after a Charles County crash involving a school bus, police say.

The bus was going south on Mattawoman Beantown Road when it came around a curve and the driver saw a State Highway Administration truck stopped in the right lane, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.

The bus driver stopped behind the SHA truck. Then, a fully-loaded dump truck that was behind the bus tried to change lanes, striking the back left corner of the bus.

The bus was carrying 17 children to J.P. Ryon Elementary School in Waldorf. The dump truck hit the school bus at the intersection of Poplar Road and Mattawoman Beantown Road, about 1.5 miles from the school.

Everyone on the bus was taken to a hospital and some had minor injuries, the sheriff's office said. The dump truck driver was not injured.

Chopper4 footage shows the truck's passenger side sustained a split hood and broken windshield in the crash.
