Ride the Waves: East Coast Surfing Competition

OK, time to cue a Beach Boys tune in your head -- the 51st Annual East Coast Surfing Championship is coming up Aug. 19-25 in Virginia Beach.

The competition features more than 300 amateur surfers and a hundred top professional surfers, both male and female, vying for a combined cash prize of more than $200,000.

Live bands will perform throughout the weekend on the oceanfront stage and all activities are free and open to the public. Who doesn't love a summer beach party?

If riding the waves isn't your thing, hit the pavement instead. An 8K run is set for Aug. 24 on Atlantic Avenue. The pPre-registration rate for the run is $35 (by Aug. 12).

If running doesn't suit you, maybe a volleyball clinic (Aug. 22) hosted by three-time Olympic Gold medalist Misty May-Treanor will. You'll train directly with Misty and other pro players during a two-person game. Tickets are $85/player. You can also opt for the three-person beach tournament (Aug. 23) and play with Misty. Tournament registration is $60 per team.

Swimsuit, slate boarding and skim boarding competitions are also taking place during the week. The events are centered around 4th and 5th streets near Atlantic Avenue.
