Heavy rain that drenched the D.C. region stopped hours ago, but rescue crews remained hard at work late Saturday night getting people out of high water.
Fire and rescue departments throughout the region reported floodwaters had closed roadways and stranded drivers.
Two dozen people attending a birthday party for a 1-year-old were stranded in a building surrounded by high water at the Meadowbrook Park Community Center in Chevy Chase about 7 p.m., Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said. Crews helped the party attendees get on boats to escape the floods.
"I rode in the raft and everybody else had to walk behind the raft. I held the two kids, the babies we had, and everybody else walked behind the raft in the water, in the puddles," said Shayla Dixon.
"The good news is they are safe and sound. Maybe some wet feet, but we were able to get in and get them out safely," Piringer said.
Montgomery County rescue workers also responded to several reports of people trapped in cars on flooded roads.
One person was trapped on the roof of their car at Brighton Dam Road. The person was rescued and taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
The National Weather Service said just before 6:30 p.m. that several streams were rising toward their flood stages. About 1 to 1 and a half inches of rain fell, the weather service said.
Fairfax County rescue crews saved a person from a car stuck in flood waters on Woodburn Road and Spicewood Drive in Annandale. They were unharmed.
The heavy rain has also affected roads throughout Loudoun County, the sheriff's office said. Authorities warned that the following roads had high water: 23500 block of Evergreen Mills Road, Sycolin Road and Shreve Mill Road and Gleedsville Road at Masons Lane.
Flooding is expected to recede at some point overnight and most of Sunday is expected to be dry. Temperatures will reach the upper 50s amid sunshine.
