Your Holiday Travel Weather Forecast

Snow flurries drifted over the District on Christmas Eve afternoon, with as much as 1-2 inches expected in areas north and west of I-95 before a winter weather advisory expires at 8 p.m.

Hagerstown, Frederick, Gaithersburg, Winchester and Leesburg are all included in the area under advisory.

Robert Courtney of Herndon reported moderate snow around 1:25 p.m., while News4 photographer Sean Casey captured video of the snow sticking (slightly) in Ashburn.

Temperatures will remain above freezing, so most snow accumulation will be on grassy areas, but there may be a few isolated slick spots on bridges and overpasses.

Elsewhere, those heading out for the holidays may face some rain on the roads.

An area of low pressure approaching the metro area is bringing some wet snowflakes. All precipitation should end by midnight, said Storm Team 4 Meteorologist Veronica Johnson.

As for those wintry areas -- Maryland's State Highway Administration said Monday it has crews out from Frederick west to make sure roads are salted and passable on Christmas Eve. Parts of Garrett County got up to 10 inches of snow over the weekend.

Highway administration spokesman David Buck says he doesn't expect major problems. He says the storm is expected mainly during daytime hours, when temperatures should be high enough to prevent icing.

Otherwise, there shouldn't be many travel problems weather-wise up and down the Atlantic seaboard, although rain may cause some delays at the airports, Johnson said.
