Weather Alert: Thunderstorms to Follow Near-Record Heat

Storm Team4 has declared Thursday a weather alert day

It might be a good day to stay inside: It's another day of near-record heat followed by thunderstorms that could be strong to severe.

Thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and evening. Storm Team4 has declared Thursday a weather alert day.

Don't expect the thunderstorms to give a break from sweltering September heat. Temperatures will be above 90 degrees — with a heat index around 100.

All of today's record highs — 96 at Reagan National, 96 at BWI-Marshall and 95 at Dulles — could be tied or broken.

Hot weather will fuel chances for afternoon storms. Forecasting models are a little unclear exactly when a storm could hit your neighborhood. Overall, there's a 50% chance of storms which are looking more likely in the evening.

Storms could be strong with damaging winds.

Friday is looking cloudy and rainy, but considerably cooler.

There have officially been 55 days this year where the temperature exceeded 90 degrees — higher than the average of 36 days per year.
