Grab a fan and some ice! The D.C. area is sizzling Friday as temperatures soar into the mid 90s.
A heat advisory went into effect for D.C., Alexandria, Falls Church and Arlington County at noon.
The heat index was around 100 degrees by late afternoon.
Fast-moving storms capable of heavy downpours moved through the area Friday evening.
Virginia Railway Express put heat restrictions will be in place along the Fredericksburg Line from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., meaning trains operate at reduced speeds.
The heatwave will continue through Sunday with temperatures in the low-to-mid 90s each day.
Here are some ways you can stay cool and prevent heat-related illnesses::
- If you have to be outside for a lengthy periods of time, don't over exert yourself.
- Take frequent breaks.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, lightly colored clothing.
- Do not leave children or pets inside vehicles.
- Check on friends and neighbors and have someone do the same for you.
