Hole-y Cow: Lightning Opens Sinkhole

Authorities believe lightning created sinkhole in Fairfax street

Bad weather may have created a large sinkhole near the intersection of Annandale and Beachtree roads in Annandale, Va.

A severe thunderstorm rumbled through that neighborhood early Friday morning, just after midnight.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that a lightning strike caused the pavement to buckle, damaging some underground Verizon cables.

A manhole and about 20 feet of asphalt also were damaged.
