DC Area Soaked by Nearly 1.5″ of Rain, Although Flash Flood Watch Called Off

If you encounter high water, do not attempt to drive through it

Periods of heavy rain kept the D.C. area soaked for much of Monday, although a flash flood watch has been canceled.

Nearly an inch and a half of rain fell Monday in the District, while Annapolis got nearly 2 inches and Dulles got .77, according to Storm Team 4.

The rain will gradually turn more showery, with clouds and low visibility remaining. However, more heavy rain could still fall overnight through early Tuesday morning, especially south and east of D.C.

If you encounter high water on the roads, do not attempt to drive through it: Turn around, don't drown. It only takes six inches of water to knock you off your feet, and a foot of water can float a small car.

Heavy winds from a possible tornado created extensive damage in Salisbury, Maryland, earlier Monday afternoon. Images from the city of Salisbury's Twitter account show downed trees and flipped-over cars. Police and fire crews have been sent to multiple locations.

Clouds will be gradual to clear through the day Tuesday, with late day sunshine possible. Otherwise, expect low humidity and temperatures to reach the lower 80s.
