Family Snowed in at Maryland Hospital After Labor Induced to Beat Blizzard

A mother who had induced labor in order to beat the blizzard wound up stuck in the hospital with her husband and newborn for days.

Emilia Holthus was born 24 hours before the snow started burying Frederick, Maryland, to avoid a mid-blizzard trip to Frederick Memorial Hospital. But after the blizzard, the family couldn’t get home.

"By the looks of it, [the blizzard] was pretty intense,” Jessica Holthus said. “There's like an 8-foot mound of snow by our driveway."

Their neighborhood near Route 15 was buried until Monday afternoon, when the roads were finally cleared. So they spent five days inside the hospital.

“We were up pretty much all night, trading responsibilities as new parents," Nicholas Holthus said.
