The end of the heat wave is in sight. But there's still some hot and humid weather to contend with first.
An excessive heat warning was issued for Washington, Arlington and Falls Church from noon until 8 p.m. and the rest of the D.C. metro area was under a heat advisory.
The combination of high humidity and temperatures in the mid-90s will made it feel close to 110 degrees.
Storm Team 4 also tracked some scattered severe thunderstorms capable of producing hail and damaging winds Friday afternoon and evening.
A code orange air quality alert remains in effect for the area due to building concentrations of air pollution, which is a threat to young children, the elderly and anyone with heart or respiratory ailment.
The hot and humid weather will carry into Saturday, with a chance of severe storms that afternoon and evening.
But relief on the way Sunday into next week as highs each day should be in the 80s.
But until that relatively cooler weather arrives, here are some ways you can stay cool and prevent heat-related illnesses::
- If you have to be outside for a lengthy periods of time, don't over exert yourself.
- Take frequent breaks.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, lightly colored clothing.
- Do not leave children or pets inside vehicles.
- Check on friends and neighbors and have someone do the same for you.
