A fast-moving area of low pressure passed through the area overnight, leaving about an inch of snow in D.C. While the accumulation wasn't much, roads in the area were slippery during the early commute.
Several accidents snarled traffic in the region, including a multi-vehicle accident that shut down the Inner Loop of the Beltway for just under an hour.
Public schools in Stafford, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, St. Mary's, Calvert, Charles, Howard, Fauquier, Anne Arundel, Loudoun, Prince William, Prince George's, Montgomery, Fairfax and Arlington counties opened their doors two hours late Tuesday, as did schools in Alexandria and Manassas City.
Most of the area received a coating to an inch of snow with 2-3 inches falling in western Maryland. And it was cold enough overnight for snow to stick on side streets.
Storm Team4 meteorologist Tom Kierein said this could be "winter's last gasp," as spring-like temperatures are on the way for the rest of the week. We'll end the week in the low 60s.
Tuesday afternoon should be mild, with highs approaching 50 degrees.
The D.C. area was hit with 10 and 15 inches of snow last week, making it the biggest storm this winter and the most snow we've seen at one time since the winter of 2010-11, said Storm Team4.
