Threat of Storms on Evening of the 4th

A group of storms threatens to drop a litte rain in the many eyes that will be trained on the skies this July 4.

A thunder storm watch has been issued for central Virginia and southern Maryland until 10 p.m. tonight, but NBC4's Doug Kammerer has good news - he expects the storms to stay south of the capital region.

The line of storms working west from the Shenandoahs seems to be on track to move south of Route 66 and south of the District, hopefully sparing the over 500,000 spectators expected to be watching fireworks on the National Mall.

Showers that do hit Virginia and points west of the capital look to be clear by 9 p.m., when most fireworks shows will go on.

Just to be safe, spectators are advised to bring along umbrellas.

Overcast skies have kept the temperature just below 90 degrees for much of the holiday Monday.  Hot and humid conditions are expected to persist through the week.  Tuesday, however, is expected to stay dry.

The next chance of storms comes Wednesday, when more humidity moves into the region.
