Storm Team4 Forecast: Expect freezing rain after snowstorm

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc.

4 things to know about the weather:

  1. Weather Alert: Ice to rain
  2. Treacherous road conditions
  3. Lots of melting Thursday
  4. Heavy rain this weekend

And just like that, the ground is snow-covered once again.

The bulk of the D.C. metro area picked up between 4" and 7" with generally higher amounts to the south and lower amounts to the north. DCA had 5.9", Dulles 4.8" and BWI 3.8".

The majority of the snow is already done but the day ahead will not be pretty. Periods of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle will last through most of the morning with, perhaps, a few dry hours from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

By late in the afternoon, with temperatures only a few degrees above freezing, rain will arrive. A steady rain will last through the overnight with temperatures hovering around 35°. Rainfall around 1/2" is likely. The rain will taper off Thursday morning as a cold front comes through and pushes all the moisture out to sea.

Gusty west/northwest winds of around 30 mph will help bring back the sunshine and temperatures will briefly get near 50°. Lots and lots of melting will take place on Thursday.

Public schools across the DMV are closed today, including in D.C.; Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William counties in Virginia; and Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland. Check here to see if your school is closed or delayed.

That breeze will stay up Thursday night and last into early Friday afternoon. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing by Friday morning so there will be a risk of some icy spots on untreated surfaces.

The Virginia Department of Transportation warns drivers to stay off the roads as road conditions deteriorate amid heavy snowfall. News4's Walter Morris reports.

Rain to come this weekend after this week's snow

Friday afternoon will be sunny, breezy and cold with highs just barely getting to 40°. Clear skies Friday evening will turn cloudy by Saturday morning with temperatures once again dropping below freezing.

Another soaking rain is coming this weekend. It might be cold enough for a few snow flurries Saturday morning but no accumulations of snow are expected.

Temperatures will eventually get above 40° Saturday afternoon and continue climbing to near 50° by noon on Sunday. An additional 1" to 2" of rain falling into whatever is left of our snowpack could lead to flooding issues on Sunday.

Strong Southwest winds could even push temperatures close to 60° on Sunday afternoon spelling the end to any remaining snow. The long-range outlook is for next week to be very cold… but dry.
