The next 36-48 hours will be bitterly cold and dry before somewhat milder air brings a rain chance for the weekend.
A cold front, with Arctic air behind it, will move through the area Tuesday bringing blustery conditions and at least a chance to see a few flakes of snow between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
No accumulations of snow are expected but the ground is certainly cold enough to support at least a fresh, white coating. Temperatures will hover in the mid-30s for most of the day but dress for wind chills in the mid-20s.

Wednesday will be sunny and bitter cold from start to finish. Wind chills will be getting close to 0° at daybreak and only rise into the mid-to-upper 10s in the afternoon as temperatures stay below freezing for the northern half of the DMV.
The wind will not be as much of a factor on Thursday as sunshine warms us from the 10s in the morning to the mid-to-upper 30s in the afternoon.
The weekend's chance of precipitation
Friday will be an easy finish to the week with temperatures near average (45°) in the afternoon. Rain still looks likely on Saturday and there might be a rain/snow mix Saturday evening into Sunday morning.
Another bitter blast will arrive on Monday, Inauguration Day, and leave us in a deep freeze for several days to follow.
