4 things to know about the weather:
- WEATHER ALERT – for Light Snow to Sleet and Freezing Rain
- Morning snow will transition to early afternoon sleet and evening freezing rain
- Highest impacts this afternoon and early evening.
- Measurable snow Tuesday – anticipate schedule & travel impacts
An area of cold, high pressure set the stage for a rain/snow mix Saturday morning.
A quick-moving storm approached our area first thing Saturday. The moisture arrived early enough in the day to bring a chance for some wet snow between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. It might be enough to whiten the grassy areas, but it's unlikely for anyone to get more than a half-inch before a change to all rain takes place.

Saturday afternoon and evening will just be cold and wet. Temperatures will stay in the mid to upper 30s while the storm delivers about a quarter-inch to half-inch of rain.
Sunday will be a repeat of Friday: generally sunny and gusty, with highs close to 50°.

When the DC area has snow chances next week
Next week will get off to a quiet start before our weather pattern turns considerably more active. It will be cloudy, cold and dry on Monday, with highs only just reaching the low 40s.
The first in a series of storms will arrive sometime Tuesday. There's a chance for rain at the very beginning of the event, but there's also increasing confidence for an accumulating snow from Tuesday night into Wednesday. The early indications are for somewhere between a 3-6" event and a 5-10" event. This is NOT our forecast at this time. This is just some guidance on what MIGHT happen. (For reference, our Jan. 6-7 storm left 6-10" across the region.)
Either way, it does look like enough of a storm to cause school and travel disruptions. To make things even more complicated, a second storm will be right behind the first. The second storm is likely to have much warmer air come along with it. A soaking rain with temperatures in the 40s on Thursday would certainly make a sloppy mess out of any snow that comes Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
There's also likely to be a third storm arriving 48 hours after the rain stops Thursday night. No matter how you slice it, next week will be one of those weeks you will need to stay up to date with the forecast.
