Storm Team4 Forecast: Sunshine, mid-40s temps to help melt down remaining snow

Storm Team4 has the weather forecast for D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia

NBC Universal, Inc.
  1. Monday meltdown (of snow)
  2. Cold wind returns Tuesday
  3. Dry through Friday
  4. Showers this weekend

Monday will be our best chance to melt away a fair amount of the remaining snow before the bitter cold returns. Generally sunny skies Monday morning, and Southwest winds, will help bring afternoon highs into the mid-40s.

A cold front will pass through the area first thing Tuesday morning allowing the bitter cold to return. It has already been a cold start to the month. Temperatures have been running 4° to 5° below average making this our coldest start to January since 2018 and the fourth coldest in the last 25 years.

Our average high is only 45° and we will be 10° to 15° below that for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This next shot of cold air, unlike the last one, doesn't have any moisture to work with so there's no risk of additional snow between now and the end of the week.

The weekend's chance of precipitation

Our pattern will get more unsettled as the weekend arrives. The cold air will be in full retreat by that time so most if not all of the precipitation will be in the form of rain…not snow.

Rain would be most likely on Saturday with only a small chance of a rain/snow mix Saturday night into Sunday.

As of now, Inauguration Day will be cold and dry followed by another few days in the deep freeze.
