Crews Monitoring For Icy, Snowy Roads

    Winter Weather on the Way

Reporter Darcy Spencer reports on the impending winter storm from Leesburg, Va. (Published Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013)

Road crews throughout the D.C. area are monitoring roads for icy patches as cold weather overnight meets Saturday's precipitation.

In Maryland, officials are urging caution for drivers heading west along I-70 through Hancock or I-68 past Sideling Hill.

The Maryland Transit Administration said it's relying on additional operators to back up buses, Light Rail and Metro operations.

Another chance for winter weather will impact the first half of the weekend. Cold air is already in place and many locations in northern Maryland, eastern West Virginia and northwest Virginia will pick up several inches of snow on Saturday.

There may be brief periods of snow in the immediate Metro area, but accumulations (if any) will be very light. Temperatures this afternoon will climb into the middle and upper 30s so this will be a rain event for the Metro area.

Once the sun goes down, and temperatures can fall off a bit, there will be additional concerns for slippery travel. Use extreme caution if you will be driving between sunset today and sunrise on Sunday.
