Orioles first baseman Chris Davis is "unavailable" and not with the team ahead of Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees, manager Brandon Hyde announced on a Zoom call with reporters. Hyde declined to give a reason for Davis' absence and offered no timetable for his return.
The news comes one day after Davis voiced his decision to "probably" wear a mask at first base moving forward.
"I think just for peace of mind, for me, it's really a personal decision just to make sure that I'm being as safe as possible and not doing anything to put myself or my teammates in harm's way," Davis said. "I've seen other guys around the league do it, I don't think it's going to be anything that's too big of a distraction, it's just going to have to be something I'm going to have to get used to. But I just think it's the right decision to make."
Baltimore is playing the Yankees after originally being scheduled to face the Miami Marlins this week. The Marlins' season is on hold after 16 players and two staff members tested positive for the coronavirus. MLB announced Tuesday that no player on any of the other 29 teams has tested positive since Opening Day.
Renato Núñez will start at first base and bat sixth in place of the absent Davis.
