Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe “Comfortable” After Silver Line Meeting

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe called a meeting Tuesday morning with some of the planners of Metro's new Silver Line to question them on the many delays.

It's already seven months behind schedule.

On April 9, the contractor submitted a declaration of completion to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which is overseeing the $5.6 billion project. The agency has until Thursday to accept or reject the declaration.

In February, it rejected the first submission of the declaration of completion.

MWAA President and CEO Jack Potter said Tuesday they will not ask for an extension.

"The 15 days are up on Thursday, and our intent is to make a decision on Thursday," he said. "We're still working through the details. We want to make sure the rail is 100 percent safe."

Once Metro gains access to the rail, they'll have 90 days to test the system.

Gov. McAuliffe left the meeting feeling reassured.

"I'm very comfortable about where we are. A few more things that we need to get done here...," the governor said.

However he wouldn't detail what's left to complete, and there is still no firm date as to when the rail will start running.

"We're right at the end zone," McAuliffe said. "We're very close, and they need to now bring the ball over the goal line, and I think we're very close at getting that done."
