Richmond residents are now one step closer to having a high-speed rail to get them to the District.
According to the Washington Examiner, the Federal Railroad Administration announced it is giving $45 million in grants to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.
The group will use the money to complete preliminary engineering plans on the rail line.
Trains are expected to travel the 115 miles at speeds up to 100 mph.
"High-speed passenger rail promises significant economic benefits for Richmond and the commonwealth," said Sen. Jim Webb.
Sen. Mark Warner agreed, adding "improved passenger rail service ... will reduce highway congestion, conserve energy and shorten travel times."
