Work to widen Interstate 66 in Prince William County begins next week.

The project will affect drivers for two years, but when it’s done, there will be three regular lanes and one HOV lane in each direction between Route 29 in Gainesville to Route 15 in Haymarket, improving traffic flow.

Expect lane closures Sunday nights through Thursday night.

The project begins Monday with the addition of a left turn lane on the westbound I-66 ramp to Route 15, which should be complete in June. The left shoulder will be closed and off-peak lane closures can be expected.

About a week later, crews will begin a two-month project to mill and pave I-66 westbound and then eastbound to prepare for a traffic shift. Expect nighttime lane closures.
