More Wii to the People: Rivals Target Nintendo with New Gizmos

Gamers, geeks, and gadgeteers have flocked to Gamer-Mecca (aka E-3 Expo) this week and it appears rivals Sony and Microsoft are setting their virtual sites on Nintendo with several new products.

The three-day event, hosted by the Entertainment Software Association features video game unveilings, demonstrations, and news conferences by hardware and software publishers.

Sony announced a new Wii-like wand controller (unnamed as of yet) designed to work with the Playstation Eye. The device features a small light emitting ball on the top and allows players to simulate tools like a virtual sword or gun.

Sony also announced the long-rumored PSPgo. The slider handheld has a 3.8-inch LCD, built-in Bluetooth and 16GB of internal storage. Sony hopes the new mini game console will steal market share from Nintendo DS and the iPod touch.

Microsoft unveiled “Project Natal” for the Xbox 360 in addition to several upgrades to Xbox live. The device combines an RGB camera, mic, and sensors to track your full body movement in 3-D, while responding to commands, directions and even a shift of emotion in your voice. Other new Xbox enhancements include full retail games on demand, 1080p movie downloads, and new features in Netflix which allow you to add movies to your que from your Xbox menu.

E3 Expo runs until June 4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
