Upper-End American Eatery on U Street

Ulah Bistro brings well-made American cuisine to U street, with its eye pleasing interior design. fun vibe and reliably efficient waitstaff. Owned by Med Lahlou, who also co-owns Tunnicliff's Tavern and Stoney's Bar & Grill, Ulah promises "good food, good service and good times."

The restaurant's two levels are light, chic and comforting. Tiny well placed lights give the restaurant an intimate vibe without feeling stuffy or pretentious. Ulah fits well into its place on U street, where upper-end eateries have been cropping up.

The main draw of the place is its pizzas. Baked in a wood-fired oven, as opposed to the gas heated ovens of other places, they range from the standard Margherita to pizzas featuring high-end ingredients like prosciutto and crab meat. Ulah also offers salads and sandwiches, including a much raved about tuna burger.

They serve lunch and dinner daily, as well as a weekend brunch. They also offer carry-out, which may be an attractive option when the place gets busy and wait times are long. The menu is moderately priced, with pizzas running around $13 and sandwiches around $10.

Ulah opens for lunch at 11 a.m., begins serving dinner at 5 p.m., and serves a late night menu from 11 until close. The weekend brunch runs from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
