Cacao opened this past summer in Cleveland Park (3508 Connecticut Ave. N.W.), but there's been scant online chatter about this new bakery/cafe/chocolate boutique. We decided to swing by to check it out for ourselves.
This is the second location for Cacao, which is owned by chef Jacques Poulain. The first, in Bethesda (7129 Bethesda Lane), opened three years ago. The shops are a physical extension of Poulain's online shop. Both Cacao locations feature an ever-expanding menu of pastries, sandwiches, salads and, of course, original chocolate creations.
Considering the Cleveland Park location took over the spot that previously housed Coldstone Creamery, the transformation inside is impressive. Though small, the space is light and airy. Outdoor seating helps maintain a Parisian feel. Pre-packed picnic items also help foster a dining-on-the-Seine atmosphere.
