Seals might not be quite as cute as those clouded leopard cubs at the National Zoo (honestly, what is?), but to hear that Canadian fishers are hunting seal ups our sympathy for the tri-flippered creatures.
Chef Cathal Armstrong (Restaurant Eve, The Majestic and PX) and Chef Todd Gray (Equinox) are teaming up with the Humane Society of the United States to host a party Tuesday to bring awareness to the Project Seals campaign.
The campaign encourages people to boycott Canadian seafood because fishers off of Canada's eastern coast engage in seal hunting during the offseason. Activists hope that the boycott will cause the fishermen to face a decrease in income and take it as a sign to stop seal hunts.
D.C. chefs and restaurateurs are gathering this Tuesday, July 21, at swanky lounge Policy (1904 14th St. N.W.), which will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Come out for your chance to meet the city's best chefs, sign a petition for the campaign and (of course) enjoy a few libations. A portion of the night's proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society, and you can RSVP by e-mailing celine@restauranteve.com.
