After 27 Years, Furin's Closes Its Doors

Sunday was a sad day in Georgetown, as a longtime breakfast spot served its last pancake before closing up shop.

Furin's, the family-owned bakery and cafe closed its doors yesterday after 27 years in business.

The mainstay at M and 28th Streets NW was a favorite among those who not only wanted a great breakfast, but delicious and beautiful cakes and other sweet treats.

The owner, Bernard Furin, said the reason he closed was pure business. He said sales were still very good, but rising food costs and property taxes made it difficult to survive without raising menu prices.

But that was never an option, as Furin said "I always wanted to give the customers a fair prices and never overcharge."

When asked what's next on the horizon, Furin said he's going to spend quality time with his 9-year-old toy poodle and play with his train sets.

Customers are distraught about the closing.
