Screen on the Green Announces 2012 Lineup

Classic films run July 16-Aug. 6, with the U.S. Capitol as a backdrop

Although half a dozen neighborhoods announced their outdoor summer movie lineups weeks back, you just can't rush quality.

Screen on the Green didn't release its lineup until mid-June, but the wait's worth it (or at least, that's what we tell ourselves while sweltering through pre-sunset picnic dinners on the Mall. After all, where else can you catch a classic film with the Capitol as a backdrop?

Storm4 meteorologist Tom Kierein says that it should be in the low/mid 80s for the first Screen on the Green on July 16, with no rain expected.

Even better, Hill Country Barbecue will be delivering dinner to moviegoers! See the rendezvous points here, and the menu here.

The complete movie lineup:

  • Monday, July 16: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
  • Wednesday, July 25: "It Happened One Night"
  • Monday, July 30: "From Here to Eternity"
  • Monday, Aug. 6: "Psycho"

Note that the second week deviates from your standard Monday night situation. That's to accomodate the ongoing renovation efforts on the Mall.

Movies begin at sunset, but show up early to stake your spot on the Mall between 7th and 12th Streets NW. (7th is closer to the screen, in case you're wondering.)

Bring blankets, picnics, and -- if you're gathering a large group -- something notable like a giant balloon, because the crowd is massive, and your pals will need a landmark. Cell phones don't always cut it: "We're near a big crowd and a garbage can. I'm wearing a white shirt... No... No... Wait, where are you?"

And although you can bring lawn chairs, you'll have to fold them up when the movie begins or risk getting hit by a flip-flop.

One last note: The movie series is sponsored by HBO and Comcast... and if you've never been to Screen on the Green before, we'll warn you now: You're gonna have to learn the HBO dance.
