Dupont Circle awoke to a Valentine's Day surprise. The Phillips Collection (1600 21st St. NW) has partnered with neighborhood knitting store Looped Yarn Works to create dozens of hand-knit hearts -- and Cupid's bows and arrows -- to adorn trees and buildings.
The practice is usually known as yarn-bombing or guerilla knitting.
Knitters, including some from the Meetup.com group D.C. Threads, met up at Looped (1732 Connecticut Ave. NW) Monday night to knit their hearts out. On Tuesday morning, they decorated about three blocks between the museum and the store.
The Phillips Collection is also celebrating the opening of large-scale yarn-and-nail installations by artist Alyson Shotz. The exhibit includes three monumental drawings made of yarn and nails. It opens Thursday as part of a contemporary art series at the Phillips.
The hand-knit valentines will likely be on view in Dupont Circle throughout the week.
