Oktoberfest, Fiesta, Xie Xie!

A festival for almost everyone

    Oktoberfest, Fiesta, Xie Xie!

Roll out the barrels of fun. In true D.C. is an international city style, there are three events shutting down some of the District's streets this weekend and you don't have to be German, Latino or Chinese to enjoy them either.

Barracks Row has recruited the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders for their 6th Annual Oktoberfest on 8th Street, SE in Capitol Hill. The beer gardens start flowing at 11 a.m. Saturday, and there will be arts and crafts, spring bulbs, pretzels and strudel and even a free, large petting zoo for the kids.

There's also a Military Culinary Competition for Top Chef with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard; each team opens their box of ingredients and then has thirty minutes to decide what to make. (Sounds like dinner at some of our houses...).

The District's Dept. of Transportation has closed 8th Street, SE between E and I Streets and G Street, SE between 7th and 9th Streets until 6 p.m. Saturday for the event.

Starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, the 11th Chinese Cultural Festival is being held in Chinatown on H Street, NW, between 6th and 7th Streets, NW. As noted on the DC Chinese Culture Festival website, "you can have a good chance to taste delicious Chinese food, to view beautiful Chinese art crafts, to watch dragon dance, lion dance, and kungfu, to take an instant Chinese lesson and have your name translated into Chinese for free, and more..."

H Street, NW, between 6th and 7th Streets, will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 6 p.m. Sunday for the event.

Then there's the big Fiesta DC, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday in Mount Pleasant. The free to the public event on Mt. Pleasant Street, NW between Argonne Place, NW and Park Road, NW includes folkloric and traditional dancers from Latin America, Spain and the Caribbean, and a Parade of Nations, which starts at 1:30 p.m.

The following streets will be closed from 6 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. Sunday for the event:

    • Mt. Pleasant Street, NW between Park Road and Argonne Place
    • Tilbourne Street, NW between Park Road and Lamont Street
    • Argonne Place, NW between Mr. Pleasant Street and Harvard Street
    • Lamont Street, NW between Mt. Pleasant Street and 17th Street
    • Kenyon Street, NW between 17th Street and Mt. Pleasant Street

The District's Department of Transportation has also advised drivers in the Adams Morgan/Mt. Pleasant area to expect delays and heavy pedestrian traffic on Sunday, and have recommended using the city's fine public transportation system to get to Fiesta DC. Taking a cab -- or parking -- within walking distance might be another, faster option too.
