No ‘Trouble in Mind' for Arena Stage

Arena Stage is hoping for an encore performance of its current theater season -- it's opening its new season while the summer productions are still breaking box-office records.

"Trouble in Mind" by Alice Childress will kick off the 2011-2012 season on Thursday. Set in 1957, the play tells the story of an integrated Broadway theater as it faces conflict over opening a play about race. It runs through Oct. 23.

In honor of the opening, Arena is also awarding its American Artist Award to actress Leslie Uggams.

The 2012 season includes the world premiere of the new musical "Like Water for Chocolate," based on the best-selling novel, which was also made into a 1992 film.

Arena Stage (1101 Sixth St. S.W.) is currently breaking its own records. More than 100,000 people have come to see the theater's production of "Oklahoma!", which has become the longest-running main stage production in the theater's 61 years. "Oklahoma!" closes Oct. 2.
