Herbie Needs A Home

Abandoned dog survives winter storms and then some

A local animal rescue group is hoping to find a permanent home for a very strong dog named Herbie.

Lucky Dog Animal Rescue said the shepherd mix was likely abandoned by his owners three months ago in Franklin County, Va.

Since then Herbie not only braved the brutal winter storms, but his veterinarian said he was injured after being attacked by a pack of dogs.

Volunteers with the animal rescue group have taken Herbie in temporarily since Saturday.

"When you do actually see the animal, it is usually worse than what the words describe him as," said Herbie's foster parent Rick Walsh.

He and his wife, Collette, have housed dozens of dogs, but said this one is special.

"He actually is very resilient," Walsh said. "He likes to keep you happy. He is a very happy dog.  His tail is always wagging. … Whoever is lucky enough to adopt Herbie will be very fortunate."

Volunteers said Herbie has improved tremendously since they first found him on Valentine's Day.
