Crowds Gather for National Menorah Lighting

Event marks beginning of Hanukkah

Thousands of people were expected to attend a special lighting ceremony at the National Hanukkah Menorah near the White House Tuesday.

The ceremony started at 4 p.m.,  marking the first night of the eight-day Jewish holiday.

Jacob Lew, director of the Federal Office of Management and Budget, was a special guest to help light the menorah on the Ellipse.

"The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band performed, and those who attended received hot latkes and doughnuts, while  personal menorah kits were distributed.
