The Strong, Silent Type

Silent and live auctions: Bread for the City's biggest annual fundraiser

The 19th annual Art With a Heart fundraiser is Thursday night from 6-10 p.m. at the Capital Hilton (1001 16th St. N.W.), and hey! You're invited. You know, if you purchase your $200 ticket, anyway.

And if you can afford that ticket in this economy (hey, it's for charity!), you can also afford to participate in what comes with it: an awesome silent auction, followed by a live one during dinner. The event raises bucks for Bread for the City, which provides nutrition, medical care, clothing, and legal and social services for low-income District residents. Last year's event raised more than $320,000.

During the silent auction, slurp up cocktails and hors d'oeuvres while you bid on items like sculptures, paintings, baskets, jewelry and pottery, plus trips such as a weeklong stay in London or three nights in New York. If the silent part of the auction makes you feel the need to chatter, bid on a meet-up with former Washington Post Editor Ben Bradlee and his wife, writer Sally Quinn. The good news: They'll spring for lunch. The live auction gets going during the sit-down dinner. Says the official Web site: "In past years we have had such treats as ... an opportunity to learn the tricks with a real-life poker pro [and] an acoustic guitar autographed by Wyclef Jean." Well, at least you'll get your money's worth.

Art with a Heart is Bread for the City's signature fundraising event. Now in it's 19th year, this year's event will be held on Thursday, March 19 at the Capital Hilton (16th & K Street NW) at 6 pm.

Here's how it goes: from 6-7:30 pm guests can peruse our wonderful silent auction items placing bids, enjoying wine or cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres. At 7:30 the silent auction ends and we will move into the Presidential ballroom for dinner and the exciting live auction. By 9 or 9:30 we will have you checked out with your winnings and on your way home...we know it's a work night.
