Party Like an Animal

Brace yourselves for a wild time

The National Zoo (3001 Connecticut Ave. NW) hosts its annual Guppy Gala Friday night. This family-friendly event lets you get up close and personal with the animals, along with enjoying some tasty treats (but don't feed the animals, please). Go rock-climbing, challenge yourself on an obstacle courses or maze, dress in costume, or get dirty at a mock construction site.

Not the adventurous type? Let's face it, you're in a zoo, not on safari, here. Not a problem. A lineup of live entertainment includes jugglers, gymnasts and musicians. Make sure you catch a special performance by The Yo-Yo Guy. And if you don't have any kids, he'll probably add a special layer of surreality over your evening.

And don't forget your stuffed animals (we know you still sleep with them!) -- vets will be performing "check-ups" on your furry friends. Sure, this miiiight be more suited to the under-four-feet-tall set, but hipsters, bring your cameras and snap faux-ironic pics of your 1980s-era Popple's checkup.

All the proceeds from the event will support animal care, conservation science, education and sustainability at the National Zoo. 6-8:30 p.m.; members $15, nonmembers $25
