Other People's Dirt, Already Dug Up

New PostSecret exhibit at Hillyer Art Space

Remember that time you read your big sister's diary? And you tried and tried to forget what you saw (ewwwwww), but your conscience never forgot?

Well, you won't have to snoop -- er, not exactly, anyway -- at PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God at Hillyer Art Space (9 Hiller Court NW), now through June 26. The exhibit offers a preview of the fifth PostSecret book (to be released Oct. 6, 2009).

Think of your deepest, darkest secret -- the one you swore you never told anyone. Maybe it's funny, like your lingering crush on New Kids on the Block. Maybe it's heart-breaking (we're not gonna go there). But then imagine designing a post card to illustrate your secret -- and sharing it with thousands of strangers.

If you're at all familiar with PostSecret, an community art project in blog (and book, and exhibit) form, then you know exactly what we're talking about. Maryland resident Frank Warren has collected more than 350,000 secrets, cut and pasted together in ways funny, artistic, angry, simple, over-the-top and then some. Frank writes on the PostSecret blog: "These secrets can tell a funny story, expose a sexual taboo, describe someone’s most humiliating experience or reveal hidden acts of kindness. Each secret is unique just like a fingerprint. But collectively they remind us how connected we all are with friends, and strangers, and how precious those relationships can be."
