Girl Power: Not So '90s Anymore

Cheering on the Washington Freedom

Sick of schlepping out to Nats Park only to watch them lose, again and again -- and again? This summer you're in luck because a team of winners are back in town: the Washington Freedom. All those ladies who remember watching the U.S. women's 1999 World Cup victory can take a moment to rejoice in the establishment of the Women's Professional Soccer League, years after WUSA became extinct.

The Freedom, once boasting superstars like Mia Hamm, now has a roster of a whole new generation of standouts, like forward and top scorer Abby Wambach.

The team's been playing across the country for the past month, but they're back in the area on July 5, when they play the Los Angeles Sol (6 p.m.) at the Maryland SoccerPlex (18031 Central Park Cir. Boyds, MD). July 18, catch them at RFK Stadium  versus the St. Louis Athletica (5 p.m.). Then they're back in Maryland to battle the Boston Breakers (July 29, 8 p.m.) and Sky Blue FC (Aug. 8, 7 p.m.).

Go see a game and remember why "Bend it Like Beckham" made you feel so joyous. (No, it wasn't because Jonathan Rhys Meyers was in it). We don't know about you, but to us, nothing says girl power like kicking some balls.

Order your tix now before all the good seats are snapped up!
